We conducted a full assessment and multi-phase repair planning. Our first task was to repair the roof framing, including common and flying purlins, plates, tie beams, and a whole truss. We cut and installed an in-kind replacement king post truss from white oak. We also installed custom steel straps to mitigate the risk of failure in the other trusses.
Our assessment revealed that the tower needed significant structural repairs and that the roof and exterior trim had considerably deteriorated. We removed the lantern with a crane to access the belfry framing and installed post repairs and replacements for both the belfry and lantern. We reproduced almost all of the millwork on the tower, including the belfry and lantern balustrades, urn finials, arches and keystones, crown molding, casing, and false windows.
With the tower framing fixed, we rebuilt the bell cradle and reinstalled the bell, making it usable once again for the school staff. Finally, we flattened the roof planes to correct some rafter sag and coordinated replacement of the stepped copper roof on the lantern along with the mast and gold leaf finial.
