Preservation Timber Framing

Traditional repair of timber-framed barns, homes, churches and steeples

Internships

Looking to gain experience in the preservation trades? We partner with Maine Preservation and the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance, inviting interns each year from across the country to get hands-on experience working alongside our crews. Interns who apply through these organizations gain a combination of preservation policy education and hands-on experience. This collaboration is extremely important to the future of our company and the timber framing and preservation trades.

Increasing demand for preservation skills

A 2023 research report published by the University of New Hampshire (UNH) examines the current state of the preservation trades along with challenges in workforce development. There is a growing demand for preservation skills across New England to maintain our historic buildings and sustain safe and practical housing stock.

As a teaching company, we recognize the importance of providing pathways to help build these practical skills. While trade skills have long been maligned in favor of academic qualifications, we are starting to see momentum build behind a new appreciation for traditional craft skills and the depth of learning required to master them.

In the UNH report, craftspeople surveyed across the preservation trades indicated high levels of fulfillment and satisfaction. At a time when many employees are feeling alienated by sedentary, repetitive work and the influence of technology, preservation presents opportunities for meaningful connection with history, nature and craft.
