Built in 1908, Wood Island Lifesaving Station was constructed for the United States Life-Saving Service. The U.S. Navy used the site in Kittery, Maine to defend Portsmouth Naval Shipyard against U-Boats during World War II. From the 1950s, the station lay unused for almost 60 years until its recent restoration. It is now open to the public as a museum.
Along with the general contractor, Chesterfield Associates, and abatement teams from Envirovantage, we completed hazardous waste removal, performed internal and external structural repairs, and installed a new asphalt roof and weathertight skin. In later phases, we restored and reproduced much of the station’s historic millwork, including doors, windows, and moldings.
